A woman’s story can do more than describe what she has lived through. It can challenge assumptions, open difficult conversations and draw attention to issues that might otherwise remain unseen.
For many women and girls in Nigeria, everyday experiences of inequality, violence, economic hardship and exclusion rarely make it into the spaces where decisions are made. At The Oguntoyinbo Foundation, we use storytelling to help change that.
Why Her Story Matters
When women are given the opportunity to tell their own stories, they are no longer spoken for. They become active participants in conversations about their communities, their rights and their future.
Storytelling can make complex social issues personal. It can help communities understand experiences different from their own, challenge harmful stereotypes and encourage people to see the human cost of policies and social problems.
A powerful story can also create the space for action.
Creating Platforms for Women to Be Heard
Through media, digital storytelling, photography, community conversations and public events, TOF creates opportunities for women and girls to share their experiences and perspectives.
Our work also supports women to develop the confidence and skills to document issues affecting their communities. Through initiatives such as our Storytelling for Governance activities, participants learn how to turn lived experiences into stories that can inform public conversations and encourage greater accountability.
We believe women should have a place in telling the stories that shape how their communities are understood.
From Personal Stories to Public Conversations
A story about access to education can draw attention to barriers faced by girls. A woman’s experience with violence can expose gaps in protection and support. A small business owner’s journey can reveal the realities behind economic statistics.
These stories help connect policy to real life.
They can encourage dialogue, build empathy and create opportunities for communities, organisations and decision-makers to listen more closely.

We do not tell women’s stories for them. We create platforms where they can tell their own stories, on their own terms, and be heard with dignity.
Because when women have the opportunity to speak, their experiences can become evidence, their ideas can become action, and their stories can help shape a better future for others.

When Women Have the Means to Build
Gender equality is often measured by representation, policy and access to opportunity. These things matter. But for many women, equality becomes real when they have the means to make decisions about their own lives.
When a woman can grow a business, provide for her family, pay her children’s school fees or put something aside for tomorrow, she gains more than an income. She gains choices. She gains confidence. And she gains greater control over the direction of her life.
At The Oguntoyinbo Foundation, we believe economic opportunity should reach women where they are.
Through our Microcapital Initiative, we provide small-scale financial support to women who have the determination to build sustainable livelihoods but lack the capital to get started or grow. The funding is paired with practical skills and guidance, helping participants turn opportunity into something they can build on.
For some women, the support means expanding a small trading business. For another, it may mean purchasing equipment, starting a service or taking an existing idea to the next level.
According to our programme records, the initiative has supported more than 500 women, helping them strengthen their livelihoods and take on greater roles as providers, entrepreneurs and contributors within their communities.
We know that capital alone does not solve every barrier a woman faces. But when financial support is combined with skills, knowledge and encouragement, it can create a meaningful pathway forward.
Because when a woman has the opportunity to build, the impact reaches far beyond her. It reaches her family, her community and the generations that follow.
